What is almond milk?
It is a simple and natural drink from almonds that is extracted as a beverage or milk out of the almonds.
The milk is plant-based and non-dairy; the extract is from rich almonds and water to replace dairy milk.
Since this is non-dairy and has low calories, this is a good substitute or alternative for dairy-based products such as yogurt or milk.
Most of the time, we use milk or yogurt to make milkshakes or various smoothies, which can increase the calorie count and hurt the human body.
The high-calorie smoothies can keep us full without building up the appetite but may not help in weight loss.
Therefore, I decided to share some healthy almond smoothies, which have less calorie count, and contribute to shedding some extra pounds.

How to make almond milk at home?
It is easy to extract almond milk at home.
Just soak the almonds in enough water for a few hours or overnight or at least five to six hours. After soaking, drain the soaked almonds completely.
The next step is to add the soaked almonds into a blending jar and then add water to the almonds.
Just use the almond-to-water proportion in a 1:4 ratio. For example, if we use one cup of almonds, use four cups of water for the milk to extract well from all the almonds.
Blend the mix of almonds and water for a few minutes until we get a fine milk texture.
Strain out the milk and discard the pulp. This is a simple way of making almond milk at home and using it quickly in various recipes or dishes.
We can even store the milk in an airtight container for at least 3 to 4 days and use it for various purposes.
Note: Peeling the almonds before blending gives more creamy and white almond milk.

Store-bought milk
Store-bought milk is readily available in stores, and one can get many types of this milk, from pure to mixed forms.
Always go for a pure form of this milk, and do not use any milk with added sweeteners, as this can increase the calories.
Cow's milk vs. Almond milk
The dairy and non-dairy milk versions are healthier, but the calorie count is essential for losing weight.
Since almond milk is a beverage mixed with water, it makes an excellent low-calorie replacement for smoothies.
If trying to use cow's milk, calories and carbs in the milk are high even though this too is a healthy and vitamin-rich dairy product.
Therefore, almond milk is the go-to beverage to follow a healthy diet to find a suitable replacement for making beverages.
Cow's milk contains lactose, which can cause issues to the human body, especially for that lactose intolerant.
Lactose intolerance causes bloating, gas, and digestion issues in the human body if the lactose in cow's milk is not suitable after consuming it.
Therefore, almond milk is free from lactose and makes a perfect replacement for non-dairy-based milk apart from other non-dairy-based milk.
Uses of Almond milk in recipes
- Use almond milk in place of milk in various desserts to get a different rich taste and enhance the taste.
- Also, making smoothies by replacing cow's milk can make the shake or smoothies healthy and reduce calories.
- Use it in making many Starbucks drinks recipes that are non-dairy.
- You can add while making healthy teas, to make puddings, cakes, and many more.
Benefits
Almond milk is a rich nutty ingredient with endless uses for skin, hair, body, beauty, food, and so on.
Below I will highlight some of the essential benefits of using almonds in different ways.
It makes a suitable replacement for lactose intolerant people, and substituting cow's milk with almond milk can help people suffering from it. It can relieve the person from stomach issues.
For those looking forward to losing weight, an alternative to dairy milk is a great option.
The non-dairy almond milk contains fewer carbs and calories and is also rich in several vitamins.
It is a rich source of Vitamin D and, therefore, works in keeping the heart healthy and other heart-related issues.
It can prevent cancer-related issues by eliminating the free radicals inside the body.
Almond milk, with regular usage, can give nourishing and glowing skin. Using the milk to make different facial packs and applying them can produce fresh and hydrating skin.
It is a wonderful ingredient to add to the daily diet in any form to strengthen hair follicles and to have stronger hair growth.

Healthy ingredients while choosing to make weight loss smoothies
Below are the simple tips to make low-calorie almond milk smoothies or any weight loss smoothies.
Fruits: Always use fruits while making smoothies as they help supply the body with different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients and give some calories.
Common ones include bananas, apples, oranges, berries, pineapples, and the flavors you like the most.
Veggies: Vegetables commonly used are kale, spinach, cucumber, and avocado are the most common veggies to add to the drink, along with carrots, cilantro, parsley, etc.
Liquids: To make low-calorie smoothies, always use water first, or to make it tastier, use almond milk or coconut milk instead of full-fat milk or yogurt.
Other ingredients: Other common ingredients to make the drink energetic are using seeds such as chia, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, and protein powders to provide protein to the drink and to keep us full.
Sweeteners: A better option for healthy drinks is to avoid sugars and sweeteners as they can increase calories and carbs.
The more calories, the more fat deposits in the body; therefore, avoid sweet substances, as fruits are loaded with natural sugars.
